The Community Centre needs a sum of £3,500 to initiate the staffing and maintenance of activities. Over five years the Centre will be able to generate increasing income from its use for village events and by 2013 we believe it will break even and its running costs will be financed entirely from its own income generation.

The next stage of the Appeal will extend its role with social projects that will benefit the life and sustainablility of the village.

The future projects that have been identified for funding and the appeal are working on are :-

1. Creation of 2 hectares of cleared irrigated land for rice farming by the village’s women farmers.

Estimated Cost : £1,000

2.  A tree plantation programme to arrest land degradation and assist in soil recovery

Estimated Cost : £1,500

3. It is our intention to encourage the village to take advantage of the arrival of a Microfinance Bank in the nearby town of Béré. The principle here is that individual villagers will be able to take out small loans - typically no more than £100 for small projects in and around the village. These are typically repaid plus interest within one year. According to the Spectator (March 2008) the returns on investment in microfinance worldwide are now sufficiently good to attract international investors. We propose to provide a guarantee for Sidtenga to participate in this increasingly significant activity.

Estimated Cost - £3,000

4. A new well to satisfy the demands of returning Burkinabé from the Côte d’Ivoire in the south side of the village as well as nomad cattle people arriving from the north.

Estimated Cost : £7,500

5. Provison of solar power in the community’s principal buildings including the School, Health Centre and the Community Centre to enable them to be used more extensively.

Estimated Cost : £7,500

  1. 6.Renovation of the banks of the village barrage or lake, so that it may be more effectively used during the dry season for production of vegetables for village use and for generating surpluses.A tree plantation programme to arrest land degradation and assist in soil recovery.

Estimated Cost : £12,500

The Appeal has carefully costed these projects. As you will see the anticipated aggregate cost of these projects is £36,500. It is intended that these projects will be completed within five years.

The Appeal will from time to time review the feasibility of the projects and their progress and modify or add to them as circumstances require.

We believe that the greater local prosperity that these projects will bring should contribute to the reduction of the flow of young people from Sidtenga to the City of Ouagadougou.
